99 Smartphones go by

This post will focus on the “I” in CIA–integrity, and Google Maps.

People rely on Google Maps to get them where they need to go and to find the quickest route. The traffic data used by Google Maps is captured by pinging smartphones that have the app open.

About a month ago a man in Berlin, Simon Weckert, got out a red wagon and 99 smartphones. He opened the Google Maps app on each smartphone and marched around town creating a terrible traffic jam (at least according to Google).

Simon’s actions were perfectly legal, but compromised the integrity of Google’s traffic data, and likely steered local drivers toward a scenic route.
